Perhaps the most difficult night of Jesus’ life took place in the Garden of Gethsemane. The night before He was crucified, Jesus took His followers there to pray. The Bible says that Jesus spent that night in agony and anguish. In fact, His torment was so great that He literally sweated “great drops of blood” and pleaded with His followers to pray for Him. What was it that brought such anguish to the heart of Jesus? what caused all of this grief and pain in the heart of Jesus? Was it the thought of the nails that would be driven through His hands and feet? Was it the beatings that He knew were ahead of Him? Is it possible that Jesus was simply afraid of the pain and physical torture that He was about to endure? The Bible indicates that it was much more than we can ever imagine. . .and he would drink it for you.
“Father, if it is your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not my will, but Yours be done.” Luke 22:42

What The Lord endured after that night until the cross was unimaginable. I’m not so sure what took place in His physical body was what He was so tormented about. I think it was that He couldn’t imagine that moment when He would be on the cross and God would turn His face from Him. That moment when they would be separated. For Jesus to take on our sins, this had to happen because God is perfect and cannot sin. Isn’t this the reason Jesus says. My God , my God why have you forsaken me? Then- it is finished.. In my own walk everything seems more bearable knowing He is with me, that He will strengthen me. Knowing Him now I can’t imagine not having Him in my life, I couldn’t imagine spending eternity without Him and it’s that healthy fear of not wanting anything to come between my relationship with Him is what helps me seek Him, repent when I veer off course and stumble. I can’t imagine The rejection The Lord must have felt at that critical moment on that cross. Jesus endured that so that we would never have to. God will never turn away from us if we come to Him .If we choose to believe that Jesus is the way the truth and the life.
