Your Last Day on Earth
If you knew that today was your last day on earth, what would you do with your time? You might eat as much as you wanted at your favorite restaurant! You might run up all of your credit cards buying stuff for people and leaving a huge debt for your children! Perhaps you would want to spend it quietly with your very favorite people or going somewhere you’ve always wanted to go. You might try to put a dent in your “bucket list.”
In John 13, we enter into Jesus’ last day on earth. Wile we never know when our last day will come, the Bible says that Jesus knew what was ahead of Him. So, He made a choice about how He would spend His last moments on earth with His closest friends. He went to great lengths to secure the room and the meal for this last Passover meal with His disciples. He arranged it just perfectly because the time would be so important. He had a specific lesson to teach His disciples on His last day on earth.
When the time came, Jesus wrapped Himself in a towel and began to wash the nasty feet of His disciples. One by one, He cleaned the grime and dirt away. To their amazement, the King of everything made Himself a servant. After the task was over, He looked at those astounded men and said, “If I then, your Lord and teacher have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.” In other words, they were to go, serve, love, and give of themselves, so that others could be cleansed by Jesus as well. On the last day of His life, Jesus made sure everything was just right so that we would see an example of the humble, selfless love and service that we are to be marked by as His followers.
