In John chapter 2 verse 25, it says that Jesus “knew what was in man.” He always seemed to know what people were thinking even when they didn’t say it. Sometimes He even answered their questions before they had a chance to ask them! This was the case in Jesus’ conversation with a man named Nicodemus in John 3. Nicodemus had a question about how to get to Heaven, and before he could even get the words out, Jesus blew his mind with the answer.
Nicodemus was a religious, moral man that knew the Bible backwards and forwards. He could have quoted much of the Old Testament by memory. He probably never missed a service or a sacrifice in the Temple. He even taught Scripture to others. Jesus’ answer to the question in Nicodemus’ heart was not at all what he expected. Nicodemus no doubt thought that Jesus would give him some good deed to do or a prayer to pray to impress God and increase His chances of going to Heaven. Instead, Jesus told him that something else had to happen. He had to be born again. . .born from above. . .to see the Kingdom of God.
Our passage today helps us understand what it means to be “born again,” and it contains the most famous verse in the entire Bible. . .John 3:16. Are you relying on your good works or coming to church to get you to Heaven? Hear the incredible words of Jesus fresh and new today:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
