This week we have the chance to watch several people take a huge step in their Spiritual lives through baptism! What does it mean when a person takes this step? First, it means that person is being obedient to Jesus. Jesus commanded every one of His followers to be baptized. (Matthew 28:19-20) Throughout the centuries, all over the world, Christians, many risking their own lives, have been obedient to Jesus by being baptized. It’s really that first step of obedience for the Christ-follower. Second, they are identifying themselves with Jesus Christ. Jesus died, was buried, and was resurrected to new life. When a person comes to faith in Christ, the old life is buried, and we are raised as well to walk in new life as a follower of Jesus Christ. (Romans 6:4) Baptism is a beautiful symbol of death to the old life, and the beginning of new life in Jesus. It’s a symbol of what is taking place in the heart of Christian. Not only that, by being baptized today, these believers are shouting to the world that they are not ashamed to be a follower of Christ! It is a very public proclamation of the truths of the gospel for all to see. Today, you will see, acted out in baptism, the beauty of the gospel that we treasure.
So, today, as you observe baptism, dwell on the gospel.
Dwell on the amazing truth that you have been made alive in Jesus Christ! Dwell on His death…His burial…His resurrection…and then stand with them as one not ashamed of Jesus! Romans 6:4 (NKJV)
