The definition of a hero is “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities “ Everyone has heroes. They might be sports figures or missionaries. They might be musicians or singers. A hero might be a father, mother, or another family member that we admire or want to be like. Heroes can be servicemen or first responders that sacrifice their own well-being for the sake of others. In Colossians 1:15-23, it is clear that the Apotle Paul wants us to understand that Jesus is more than just a man to be admired for his achievements. He is more than a courageous person with noble traits. Paul wants us to see that there is no comparison to Jesus. There is another definition of hero. It can also mean, “the principal character in a story.” It is this definition that Paul is driving at in these verses. Jesus is the “hero” of the story. He is the principle character in the story of God throughout eternity. Jesus is at the center of everything, and holds everything together. The question for each of us is whether or not Jesus is the principal character in our lives. Is He at the center of everything for you? Does he hold everything together? Is Jesus your hero?
