WHAT GOT US THIS FAR. . .
As a part of Gateway’s long range strategy, multiplication of our campuses, and planting churches is always on our minds. With that being said, initially, there were no real plans for moving toward a work in Covington any time soon. However, early in 2017, when preparing for the summer Kids Club mission began, a group of faithful volunteers planned to host a club in Covington at the Housing Authority. Out of that weekend in July grew a desire to come back every month! It’s grown so much since then — with more volunteers getting connected and new families coming each month. Through the relationships built during this club, we’ve become more and more aware of the need in Covington. Through this Kids Club, we have been able to partner with Forerunner Baptist Church, a predominantly African American congregation and their pastor, Bro. Thomas Bester.
Bro. Steve Carpenter, Gateway’s Lead Pastor, met with Bro. Bester and ended their time together with a specific prayer “God, what is it that You want to do in Covington, and how do you want us to be a part of it.”. That was on Tuesday. On Friday of the same week, Bro. Steve got a call from the owner of a building on the Square asking if there were any thoughts of starting something in Covington. It is clear that our plans, aren’t always God’s plans!
WELL, WHERE IS IT!?
The building is basically ready to go. And it is being offered at an incredible rental price. Over the next few weeks, Steve began sharing with leadership, prayer partners, deacons, and finally with our congregation at our Family Meeting in October. Every conversation has been met with excitement.
The building is located at 101 W. Court Square. It’s “The Chamber Center” (on the square in Covington). As a matter of fact, it is where we held Christmas with Dignity 2017! There is very little work has to be done to the building for our purposes at this time. As a matter of fact, there are chairs, tables, audio/visual equipment, a well equipped prep kitchen, and plenty of restroom facilities. The building will be easy to minister from and easy to find.
GREAT! WHAT WILL THE MINISTRY LOOK LIKE?
Gateway will aim to love and minister to the whole community during the week and conduct services on Sunday afternoon or evening. We will have the same emphasis on discipleship and the gospel that exists at all of our campuses.
The weekday ministry has a million possibilities as we seek to love the people of Covington so that many might find Jesus and follow Him! The barriers are great, but the gospel crosses every racial, ethnic, and economic line. The goal is that the ministry of Gateway on the Square and all of our campuses would reflect the beauty and diversity that exists around the throne of God. Our desire is that Gateway on the Square will be an evangelistic, disciple making church that reaches in love to every part of Covington and beyond.
OKAY, WHEN DOES IT LAUNCH?
Experience tells us Easter is an optimal time. But it’s really more important that we lay the groundwork properly. We’ll spend time building a solid core team, train them, and begin forming well planned ministries.
The core group will begin meeting soon. If you would like to be part of that, you can complete the contact form below. The building will be available after the first of the year. There’s lots of training and meeting together in the days to come as we prepare for a launch.
Will you dream with us? Imagine what’s different about this. Think of the things that can be accomplished that will live on beyond us. Get excited and pray!
