The letter of I John is all about having the assurance of our salvation. How do I know for sure that my relationship with God is real? How do I know for sure that I am going to Heaven when I die? How do I know that I’m not just fooling myself into thinking that I am right with God? John wrote this book to answer all of those questions.

Most believers doubt their salvation at some point in their lives, but God did not design us to live in doubt.

John gives a number of key “tests” concerning our salvation so that we can be certain. In I John 2, we are clearly told that if a person “loves” the world or the things in the world, then the love of the Father is not in Him. John then goes on to describe what it means to “love the world”. It is crucial that we understand what it really means to make an idol out of the things of the world. In fact, it is so important that John says it is a key to understanding whether or not we really know God. As we continue to study I John, may we truly seek to live our lives in the confidence and joy of our salvation in Christ.
