“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.” C.S. Lewis

In Colossians 3:1-11, Paul encourages us to “seek those things which are above” and to “set our minds” on things above and not on things of the earth. Far too often, we settle for the things of this world. We settle for worshiping idols instead of worshiping God. We settle for the counterfeit instead of the real thing. Mankind seeks to find happiness, fulfillment, purpose and joy in possessions and money, and even in relationships that we think can complete us. . .but they never do.

When we seek to find our life in these things, the result is never good.l In Colossians 3:4, Paul states that “Christ is our life…” It is only as we seek Him and denounce our idols and feeble attempts at real life, that we find all that He has for His children. Are you making mud pies in the slum, when God offers so much more? Have you been “far too easily pleased” with the cheap imitations of the world?
