We often think of the Lord’s Supper or Communion as an act of worship between us and God. It is a time of remembrance of what Christ has done for us on the cross, and a time of examination of our own hearts and lives. Even though it is indeed a very personal time, we need to remember that it is something that we are commanded to do “together.” There is a bond or a “common union” that we share as believers and celebrate at the Lord’s Supper. it is an incredible time of unity for the church!
With this in mind, we must realize that our relationships are very important as we come to the table to worship and remember. In fact, the context of the whole Lord’s Supper discussion in I Corinthians is about the factions and divisions in the church and how they were wrong to eat the Lord’s Supper with division and unforgiveness among them. Jesus spoke to this as well in Matthew 5:23-24.
“Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”
This weekend, we partook in the Lord’s table, asking ourselves if we need to offer forgiveness to someone that has wrong us. Our worship and community are surely hindered if we allow these things to stay in our heart and commit the sin of unforgiveness. May today be a time of rejoicing together as the church and a time of restored relationship.
